Caravaning-Page 1

There's something about caravaning that is hard to put your finger on, but whatever it is, it makes you keep coming back for more ? it might be the pitter patter of rain on the roof, the fact that you can "live" somewhere else for a long weekend, or even a holiday in some far flung place, I dont know !! all I do know, is that we have never been without a caravan for very long before we have bought another one, our Yacht is great for seeing different ports, even different lands, but it would be very hard to "hook" the boat up to the car, and drive inland to see some of the sites ! the mast might knock a few power cables down ?? I first started caravaning when I was quite young, my dad let me borrow his van, and his car as well (dont all dads ?) and off I went to the West Country, up the M4 Motorway, and "snaking" nearly all the way !! I think that trip must have been the start of me losing my hair ?? but we survived, just, and it had given me the bug to get a van of my own, with all mod cons, like a HEATER to  keep warm !! as the years went by I had a succession of vans, all cheap and nasty, but giving great pleasure and allowing us to visit many places that we would not have otherwise seen, in fact, just for the hell of it, we even visited a "nudist camp" great fun, and what an eye opener ?? the picture below is of one of our early vans, it looks old and dated now, but at the time, it was our "pride and joy !!

How could I love this ??

I think the biggest improvement to the comfort of the van was the day we tried out our new(ish) awning, it meant we had an extra room, almost as big as the caravan itself ? I could play all day long pulling down zippers ? having air vents, and sitting outside when it rained !! it was also somewhere to keep the sun loungers, table and chairs, telly, three piece suit, ???? Mmm, but without a doubt, it was the best investment for comfort that we added, the picture below is of our "awning" on one of our other "new" (old) vans, but it was  but it was a big step up from the last van we had WOW, this one did not even let in the water when it rained ??

Our Mansion on the Van !!

It was not long though before we started to get a little bit better quality vans, and a little bit longer to, and we visited quite a lot of "Britain" but from a personal feeling, I think the most impressive area that we visited was "Scotland" Catherine (if you dont know already ? she is my wife) was actually born in Scotland, in a place called "Fife" which is on the east coast, but she had left Scotland at a very young age and moved to another country, (her father was in the Air Force) so she could not really remember what her birth place was like, I must admit, when it was first suggested that we go touring round Scotland, my first reaction was of horror !! You have got to be kidding, I replied, all that rain, cold weather, strong winds ??? No, I dont think so !! my mother was also going to come on this trip as well so the last thing we wanted was to be somewhere cold, lets go to Spain ? or France, I said, it was obvious that my mother agreed with this suggestion as well, for there was a grin and a little twinkle in her eye, but somehow ? it was agreed that Scotland was going to be the place, the van I had for this trip was a bit more "upmarket" so we had our heater, hot water, and all the other trimming, so I thought "Oh well" it might not be quite so bad !! Golly ?? was I ever wrong about the weather, for the whole three weeks that we were "on tour" I think we only had one day of rain, and the rest of the time was hot sunshine !! the picture below is of us just leaving "Pettycur Bay" which was our first night stop over in Scotland, and already I had the shorts on !! the van is an Elddis Storm, 24ft long, and with the length of my car as well, the whole unit was something like 40ft in length !!!

My unit, with mum making sure she is in the picture !!

some of the sites in Scotland are out of this world, and No !! I dont mean my legs either ?? when we got up into the Highlands, the views were breathtaking, and on more than one occasion, I went off road into the forests looking for wild life, and we did in fact find lots of it, including some deer and we once saw a really big "stag" looking very proud with himself, but I would only recommend going off road in a 4X4, as there are some rather large rocks about, on one of the days, we decided to visit "Loch Ness" to see if we could see the monster ? (I wonder how many other people have said that) and boy !! did we think we were lucky, we could not see it, but we sure could hear it ?? but on rounding the corner we saw the cause of all the noise / music ??   yes, it was someone playing the Bagpipes !!!!!
